Series: The Aqua Saga
Genre: YA Dystopian/ sci fi
Format: eBook and print
Release Date: March 31st 2014
The year is 2042 and the world has been consumed by water.
Those who survived the great floods of 2012 clung to the debris of the Old World from which they rebuilt their lives.
Pym Maddox thought life was good living on the floating city called Aqua. Harboring secret feelings for her best friend, the smoldering Rush Rodgers, was the least of her problems. Rush is the son of her father’s second in command, a boy whom her father approved of – or so she thought. After her people are moved onto her father’s navy vessel, a motion which is only the start of the torrent of secrets that begin to unravel. Pym’s search for answers lead her and Rush to a secret underwater lab that just might hold the answers to everything.
Pym soon discovers that the world she grew up in is not what it seems, and her father may hold the key to unlocking the biggest secret of all – the reason Pym and Rush have a mysterious connection to the water.
Secrets and water have one thing in common: they get distorted on the surface.
“Secrets and water have one thing in common:
they get distorted on the surface.”
I have recently found this book and I was at first allured by its mysterious cover and by the synopsis. I usually do not tend to read e-books since I do not own a suited e-reader but I really wanted to give this book a go since it was not that big and it sounded really good.
After reading a few pages I was really wondering what the book was about and I somehow dived in the story without even realising how the pages were flowing beneath my eyes. I was captured by the plot and by the characters of the book.
The chapters alternated between the female protagonist, Pym, and the male protagonist, Rush. I really like books that have two characters who show their own side of the story, informing the reader with more things that help him understand the things that they are supposed to overcome as the story evolves.
I really liked this book since it brought something new to me. The secrets that are held at Aqua, a floating city, make the reader curious and more curious. The dark secrets that revealed in front of my eyes made my jaw drop since when I began reading “The Aqua Secret” I had no idea of what the big secret would actually be.
The main characters, Pym and Rush, who have been friends since they were young, were to my liking. As time had passed they started to have another view of one another but their fear of ruining a friendship does not let them take a step further. Their bond is strong and they always are there for one another despite their rare arguments.
When I found out that most of those who remained alive (after the world had been consumed by water) got the ability to keep their breath under water for a longer time than normal humans can, I started to wonder how that was possible. Rush had been capable to stay under water for a longer period comparted to others of his kind and, when he realised that something with him was starting to change…he wanted to keep it a secret, even from Pym. Secrets among secrets, lies among lies. Pym is scared when she finds out an unbelievable truth that she did not want to acknowledge.
This book was a combination of romance, secrets, fear and betrayal, a dystopia which kept me reading and reading, hoping for the characters to confess their love and survive the dark secrets that are bound to make the next generations something that could be considered unearthly…
I did not give the book a full 5 stars since there is room for improvement but I want to say that it is a really catchy read! I am curious if the next book will be more awesome! I am really curious what is going to happen next and I have big expectations!
“I looked around and could see nothing but ocean. There was no land in sight. There were others floating on pieces of steel just like my family and me… but where we were floating to – I did not know.”
“I would often lay in bed at night and dream that Rush and I were swimming to another community and that they would befriend us and show us their ways. But I knew this was only a dream.”
“God, she was so damn beautiful, and I tried with all my might and all control not to walk over there and steal her oxygen by kissing her. Did she have to stare at me as if she wanted to do the same?”
“Looking up at the surface of the water, the sun’s rays were bright so I could see his face clearly. He swam toward me and put his hand on my waist. I smiled at him to thank him for coming with me, and he nodded.”
” “That’s exactly right, my dear girl.” I clenched my teeth to stop my jaw from popping open in shock. “You and your little boyfriend are what I call the future. You are the Adam and Eve, and who are going to give birth to a new race, a brand new species.” “
I heard my name and knew it must be Rush. He was coming after me, so I swam faster. His voice was closer now.
“Pym!” Then came the persistent banging.
“Pym, wake up!” Now I knew I wasn’t dreaming. Ignoring my lack of clothes, I groaned and slid out of the bunk I was in, landing on the cold, metal floor. How did I get here? Where am I? I didn’t have time to deliberate over the situation, because the person on the other side of the door kept banging. I hurried over to the door because the banging had gotten more persistent by the second.
“Coming. Hold your horses!” I unlocked the bolt across the door and yanked it open. Rush tumbles in with fist raised to knock again.
“Rush? What are you doing here? You shouldn’t be here! My father will kill you.” I looked him over. He was in his pajamas as well. “What happen to our code?”
“Can I talk to you?”
“Sure, but in the morning.” I tried to shut the door in his face but his hand stopped it.
“Please. I have to speak to you now.”
“Fine.” I exhaled. “Come in before anyone sees you.” I grabbed his shirt and pulled him inside. He forgot about the lip all the watertight doors have and tripped over it, crashing into me, and sending us both tumbling backwards. He landed on top of me, and I couldn’t breathe. He raised his head and looked at me with those incredible blue eyes I love. My breath caught in my throat as something stirred inside me. Something I had been denying for years. His dark hair hung over those blue sapphires dashingly, driving me crazy. I pushed away the sudden urge to lean up and kiss him.
“You’re crushing me,” I gasped.
“Oh, sorry.” He uses the floor on either side of us to push himself up, and once he’s to his feet, he offered his hand for me.
“Thank you.” I take it and his strong arm pulled me up. It was then that I felt naked and vulnerable as his teenage eyes took in my long bare legs, my very short boy-leg shorts, and my black training t-shirt.
“Thanks.” I attempted to hide my flushed cheeks when I shoved his chest. “Now say what you have to say before I throw you out.”
He exhaled and looked up at my face. “I just want to say that I… I had a bad dream, and I can’t sleep.”
“A dream about what?” I said as I sat down on the lower bunk bed.
“I dreamt that Aqua was sinking.”
I stare at him in disbelief. “Sinking? Impossible.”
“It could happen, you know. If one of the other militias decides to set missiles on us.”
“Rush, my dad has made it clear there are no other militias. There are no other communities but ours.”
“That is where you’re wrong.”
I stood up and began pacing. “No, it’s not true. My father has told me that…”
“Your father is lying to you. Your father has been lying to all of us.” “Rush, that is a dangerous accusation you’re making.”
“I don’t care. I know what I saw.” My eyes widen. “What you saw? What are you talking about?”
“I was out on patrol with my father this morning when I saw something in the distance.”
“It could be a mirage. You know how the ocean plays tricks on you.”
“No, I know it’s another community. My dad even hinted at it.”
“He knows something. I asked him what it could be, and he changed the subject as if he didn’t want me to know. I’m telling you, Pym, we’re not the only survivors.”
I sat back down beside him. “Okay, let’s say it’s true. We can’t really go telling our parents about it. They’ll call us foolish children and brush us aside, or even worse, believe us and go killing them.”
“We don’t even know what they’re like, the others,” Rush said.
“Which is the reason we should go and investigate. We could swim over there and…”
“Are you insane?” I gripped his arm, nails biting into his flesh.
“Yes, I am. Insane is my middle name,” he grinned. I wacked him.
“I’m serious, Rush. Our parents would never allow it and…”
“And they aren’t going to know. It’ll be our little secret.” He moved closer and placed a finger on my lips. In that moment, I was very aware of how close we were. Our thighs touched, and so did our gazes. Years of crushing on him, loving him, boiled down to this very moment. I wanted to lean forward and kiss him so bad. I don’t know why a second later I changed the subject and moved back.
“Where are we? We aren’t in my room or yours.”
“I know. We’re in your father’s vessel.”
“What? Why?” I knew this was serious. We never fled to the ship. It was only used on patrol missions.
“Someone triggered the alarm. I don’t know who, but I was on my way to my room when I found your Mom standing outside with you. You fainted, Pym.”
“Fainted?” This was so weird. I never fainted.
“Yeah. I carried you onto the ship.” “Where were you?”
“Out on patrol, like I said.”
“Oh.” I looked down at my hands, looping my thumbs round and round each other. “So that’s why you weren’t at lunch.”
“I’m sorry. I wanted to tell you, but my father pulled me away. He didn’t give me time to explain. Why? Were you worried about me?” He moved closer and smiled. I looked up at him and shoved him.
“You’re such a loser.”
He shoved me back. “You’re the loser.” He stood. “Anyway, I’ll see you at breakfast tomorrow. Okay? Get some sleep.”
“Hey, I was already sleeping. You woke me up because you couldn’t sleep.”
“Funny. Sweet dreams. Okay?”
“You, too.” I smiled at him and slipped back into bed as he let himself out. I could’ve sworn I saw him wink on the way out.
1. Hello Ms. Hunter! Thank you for accepting this interview! How about telling the readers some things about you?
Thankyou for offering! I live in Australia with my family. I’ve been writing since the age of 15, beginning with fan fiction. I am HUGE fan of superheroes and characters with special abilities, so I get the most enjoyment out of creating characters with new and unique abilities and super powers. P.S. I love coffee and chocolate. Anything else you’d like to know?
2. What is your book “The Aqua Secret” about? Tell us a few words about it.
The Aqua Secret follows the adventures of 17- year old Pym and Rush as they deal with the secrets in which their father’s have been hiding from them and their people. They live in a dystopian community out in the middle of the ocean. But this book is unlike anything you’ve ever read before so throw away the idea of thinking this is about mermaids, because its not! Believe me, I’ve had this alot!
3. When did the idea of the book come to your mind? Did anyone influence you?
The idea for the The Aqua Secret came to me the way most of my book ideas come to me, in a dream. I’ve always been fascinated with dystopian stories and worlds and wanted to create my own that was entirely different from anything you’ve ever read. I hope I did the genre justice!
4. The cover of the book looks really wonderful! What is its story?
Oh, all credit goes to the wonderful Regina Wamba for that masterpiece! She’s a cover goddess! I just threw ideas at her of what I wanted and then we bounced ideas off each other. Eventually she came up with the work of art you see today. I think it’s my favourite cover so far.
5. Which is your dearest characters from your book? Do you have any character that you do not like?
Some people may know that I live for writing evil characters with a redeeming quality, but General Peter Maddox has no redeeming quality, so I do not like him. I do like Pym and Rush however, and love their chemistry. I love watching or reading really beautiful chemistry work between two people. Also, Pym has some of the best one- liners and retorts! I believe she could be a heroine young readers admire in the future.
6. Do you have in mind a playlist for your book series “The Aqua Saga”?
I don’t have a set playlist but I have a selection of certain artists I listen to when I write a certain series. For The Aqua Saga it’ll probably remain Imagine Dragons. Their songs Demons and Radioactive really inspired me. Demons IS Rush’s song.
7. Make a top 5 with books that you really loved and name a book that you did not like.
Oh Gosh, this list could on forever with my favourite books, but I can’t name a book I don’t like for fear of being hunted down.
But the top 5 books I love that I can recall are:
1. The Hobbit
2. The Touch Saga by Airicka Phoenix
3. The ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy by Phillip Pullman
4. The Illumine series by Alivia Anders
5. The Mortal instruments by Cassandra Clare (basically anything by Cassandra Clare)
But I will say I have never really gotten into Harry Potter (don’t hate me!)
8. Where do you usually like to write your works?
I write on my computer at my desk. I occasionally joy ideas down on my iPad though.
9. What country/countries would you like your books to be popular in?
I think it would be really cool for my books to be popular in Japan. As I write really visually – when I write I imagine my story unfolding like a movie – and because Japanese culture revolves so much around manga art, anime and graphic novels, I’d love to one day see my books be made into graphic novels.
10. Thank you for answering all of these questions! As an ending, you can say anything that comes to your mind to the readers of this blog.
Thank you for taking the time to read my interview. I’d love it if you’ll please check out The Aqua Secret. It’s out now in eBook and paperback.
